Mediation Foundation Training
A six-day accredited foundation course in mediation, delivered by practising mediators, leading to registration as a Trained Mediator with the College of Mediators.
Course Synopsis
This six-day accredited training course is designed for individuals who want to build their knowledge, confidence and practical skills in conflict resolution. Whether you are looking to move into mediation or strengthen your communication and conflict management skills within your current role, this course provides a practice-based foundation that you can apply immediately.
On successful completion, you will be eligible to register as a Trained Mediator with the College of Mediators, enabling you to work within community and workplace mediation settings.
The training is delivered by practising mediators who bring insight from their current practice. This allows us to ground the learning in live challenges, realistic scenarios and relevant case studies, ensuring the training reflects the complexities of mediation in practice today.
Delivered through a hybrid model, the course combines flexible learning with in-person sessions that focus on practical and interactive development. You will take part in role play, case studies and skills-based exercises, giving you the opportunity to build confidence and apply your learning in a supportive environment.
The course also provides a pathway into specialist areas of mediation, including SEND. Following the training, there are opportunities for ongoing support and supervision with our Professional Practice Consultants (PPCs), supporting you to take the next steps and begin your mediation practice with confidence.
The course is delivered in groups of six to ten so that every participant gets individual support throughout.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, learners will be able to:
• Explain the history and development of mediation and critically evaluate the ethical principles and value base that underpin contemporary mediation practice.
• Analyse key theories of conflict and conflict resolution and assess their relevance and application within mediation settings.
• Demonstrate core mediation skills and strategies, including active listening, questioning, reframing, and summarising, through participation in simulated case study scenarios.
• Explain and apply the negotiation model that forms the foundation of modern mediation practice, including interest-based and principled negotiation approaches.
• Manage the mediation process effectively, demonstrating the ability to structure sessions, maintain neutrality, and adapt techniques to suit different contexts such as workplace, family, and commercial disputes.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing mediation in the UK, including professional standards, confidentiality, and the role of mediation within the civil and family justice systems.
• Apply reflective practice to support ongoing professional development, identifying strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies for enhancing mediation competence.
Course Details
For: People wanting to train as a mediator in workplace or community disputes; those wanting to go on to access further SEND mediation training; and people developing mediation skills for an existing role
Prerequisites: This is a foundation course, taught at level 4–5. You must be at least 18 years old, proficient in written and spoken English, able to participate in reflective learning and role plays, and have sufficient emotional resilience and professionalism to work with people in conflict.

Sophie Webster
Sophie worked in the NHS from 2006, including more than a decade as a community children's physiotherapist specialising in neurology and neuromuscular conditions. That work with children, families and colleagues across education, health and social care underpins her commitment to multi-agency, inclusive practice. Since training as a mediator she has worked mainly in family and workplace mediation, and is also trained in conflict coaching and Family Group Conferencing. At Prime Resolution she leads business development and marketing for family mediation, workplace mediation, supervision and conflict coaching, and is the organisation's Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is particularly concerned that children's voices are heard in decisions that affect them. Outside Prime she is a secondary school governor with responsibility for SEND and safeguarding.
Marilyn Webster
Marilyn trained as a family mediator in 1991 and has practised continuously since. Her SEN work predates the 2001 Code of Practice: she sat on the regional working party that helped draft its mediation sections, and in 2001 delivered in-house SEND mediation training to one of the first regional SEND mediation services. For close to twenty years she has served on working groups and boards of national mediation organisations, pressing for practice standards across the profession. At Prime Resolution she leads the development and delivery of our training, runs supervision and professional practice consultancy for our mediators, and coaches trainees to accreditation.
